CE 205- Construction Materials ( 6- ECTS)

(Pre-Requisites: CHEM 111)

A required course for undergraduate Civil Engineering majors, this course is usually taken in the second semester of the second year. The course introduces students to materials science, or how materials derive their properties.

This course establishes a strong background in the structure, properties, and behavior of construction materials, including metals, Portland cement concrete, asphalt, wood, polymers, masonry, and composites. Laboratory exercises illustrate the mechanical behavior of selected materials and demonstrate selected principles of mechanics.

CE 391- Engineering Certificate: Concrete Materials (4- ECTS)

(Pre-Requisites: CE 205)

This course is offered as an Engineering Certificate or a free elective for Engineering majors and usually taken upon successful completion of CE 205. The course aims to develop knowledge regarding the practical applications of concrete materials.

In this class, students learn about the application of concrete materials in the field based on their mixture design procedures and required properties. This class will provide introductory background in quality control of concrete materials, inspection and resolution of problems in concrete structures

CE  505- Advanced Materials Science ( 7,5- ECTS)

(Pre-Requisites: Instructor’s approval)

This graduate level course ( for Engineering Grad Students) is also offered as an Area Elective (Structures) for Civil Engineering majors  The course aims to develop an advanced knowledge of atomic structure, mechanical properties, deformation behavior and failure of engineering materials and applications of materials behavior in engineering.

This course establishes a strong background in the atomic structure, properties, and behavior of engineering materials, their elastic, plastic and viscoelastic behavior, the relationship of mechanical properties to internal structures of ceramics, metals and polymers and applications of material behavior and properties to design of engineering systems, metallic corrosion, and its prevention
